[Financial News] Cho Kuk, former leader of the Rebuilding Korea Party (RKP), sharply criticized President Lee Jae-myung on the 30th of last month, saying, "We must face why the approval rating for state affairs is falling." Since losing the by-election for Pyeongtaek-eul National Assembly seat held alongside the June 3 local elections, he has been taking a hard line against the government and the ruling party almost daily.
That day, Cho shared on Facebook an article titled, "President Lee's approval rating has fallen across the board among liberals, moderates and conservatives."
The article said that in three public opinion polls conducted after the June 3 local elections, President Lee's approval rating for state affairs had fallen across the board. It also included analysis that some in the pro-government camp, including YouTuber Kim Ou-joon, interpreted the decline as a "defection of the core support base," but that the actual trend was far from that explanation.
In response, Cho said, "Despite achievements such as the European tour, KOSPI 8,000 to 9,000, and record-high exports, we must face why the approval rating for state affairs is falling."
In fact, Gallup Korea Research Institute surveyed 1,000 voters aged 18 and older nationwide from the 23rd to the 25th on President Lee's job performance. The positive rating came in at 51%, down 6 percentage points from the survey two weeks earlier. The negative rating, meanwhile, rose 6 percentage points to 41%.
By political leaning, the decline was steepest among moderates, down 9 percentage points. Conservatives fell 7 points, and liberals dropped 5 points. By age group, those in their 40s saw the largest decline at 11 points. Ratings among people in their 30s and 50s also fell by 6 points each.
