Paraguay, which beat Germany to reach the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, declared June 30 local time a national holiday.
The Paraguay national team pulled off a major upset the previous day, defeating the German juggernaut in the round of 32 at the World Cup in Boston, Massachusetts, United States.
Germany, one of the leading favorites to win the title, was held to a 1-1 draw with Paraguay through 120 minutes, including extra time, before eventually falling in the penalty shootout.
As Paraguay produced one of the biggest surprises of the tournament, President Santiago Peña announced on X (formerly Twitter) that June 30 would be designated a national holiday.
Paraguay reached the quarterfinals at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, but struggled afterward and returned to the finals for the first time in 16 years before joining the round of 16 by also defeating Germany.
Another Latin American nation, Ecuador, also declared June 26 a temporary holiday after it beat Germany 2-1 on May 25 and secured its place in the round of 32.
