[Financial News] Keiko Fujimori, a right-wing candidate, narrowly won Peru's presidential runoff after a razor-thin race. She is the first woman ever elected president in Peru.
On the 29th local time, Agence France-Presse (AFP) and other outlets reported that Peru's National Election Commission said, "Keiko Fujimori won the presidential runoff after defeating left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez with 50.13% of the vote."
The presidential election held on the 7th sparked allegations of fraud as vote counting was delayed for weeks. Sánchez accused Peruvian authorities of manipulating overseas votes to favor Fujimori and asked the election commission to invalidate all ballots cast at overseas consulates. After reviewing the disputed ballots, the commission found that Fujimori was ahead of Sánchez by about 49,600 votes.
Fujimori is the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, who was imprisoned on charges of human rights abuses. This was her fourth attempt at the presidency. Her father was elected president of Peru in 1990, staged a self-coup in 1992, and ruled as a dictator before being impeached in 2000. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison for human rights abuses committed during his rule, served time, was pardoned in 2023, and died in September 2024.
