[Financial News] Yoo Hae-jin, who dominated theaters during the Lunar New Year holiday with the film "The Man Who Lives with the King," is set to lead the box office again this Chuseok.
On the 30th, distributor Hive Media Corp. announced that the film "The Assassins," starring Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il and Lee Min-ho, will be released this Chuseok.
The film is a mystery thriller based on the attempted assassination of the first lady, which was broadcast live nationwide on August 15, 1974, National Liberation Day of Korea. Hur Jin-ho, the director of "Princess Deokhye," "Forbidden Dream" and "Christmas in August," is at the helm.
At the live broadcast of the 1974 National Liberation Day ceremony, an unprecedented incident occurs as the first lady is shot. The case is quickly closed with the arrest of a suspect, but Detective Cheol-gu, who was in charge of security at the scene, Jae-hwan, the social affairs chief at a newspaper, and rookie reporter Young-il discover contradictions between the official findings and what actually happened. As the three track down the whereabouts of two missing bullets from the four recovered and the records, they move closer to the truth behind the incident and the forces behind it, known only to those who witnessed it but to no one who truly understood it.
Yoo Hae-jin plays Detective Cheol-gu, who was responsible for security at the scene. Cheol-gu begins to question the discrepancy between what he witnessed and what the investigation headquarters announced, and he uses a detective's instincts to uncover the truth behind the case.
Park Hae-il takes on the role of Jae-hwan, the head of the newspaper's social affairs desk, and is expected to portray a veteran reporter who gets closer to the truth. Lee Min-ho plays Young-il, a rookie reporter with youthful drive and a relentless instinct for reporting, adding tension to the film.
Hive Media Corp. has earned recognition for both artistic quality and commercial appeal by producing films based on modern Korean history, including "Seoul Spring" and "The Man Standing Next." This project also brings together a large number of veteran Chungmuro filmmakers. Cinematographer Lee Mo-gae and lighting director Lee Seong Hwan, who worked together on "Seoul Spring," "Exhuma" and "Hunt," reunite once again. Art director Kim Byung-han and VFX supervisor Jeong Jae-hoon also joined the production, raising expectations for its overall quality.
