[Financial News] It was belatedly revealed that Hong Ra-young, former deputy director of Leeum Museum of Art and a member of Samsung's controlling family, has formed in-law ties with Lee Sang-hoon, former chairman of the board and president of Samsung Electronics, a professional manager.
According to The Chosun Ilbo and Newsis on the 29th, Hong's second daughter and Lee's eldest son were married on the 27th at The Shilla Seoul in Jangchung-dong, Jung District, Seoul.
Family members from both sides and top Samsung executives were reportedly in attendance.
Hong is the second daughter of the late Hong Jin-ki, former chairman of the JoongAng Ilbo. She is the younger sister of Hong Ra-hee, honorary chairwoman of Leeum Museum of Art, and the aunt of Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong. She previously served as an executive director at the Samsung Foundation of Culture, deputy director of Leeum Museum of Art, and senior deputy director of Leeum Museum of Art before stepping down from the front line in 2017.
Lee Sang-hoon graduated from the economics department at Kyungpook National University (KNU) and joined Samsung Electronics. He later served as head of strategy at the Samsung Future Strategy Office, head of management support at Samsung Electronics, and chairman of the board of Samsung Electronics. Known as an expert in strategy and finance, Lee currently serves as a non-executive adviser to Samsung Electronics.
Meanwhile, the marriage was reportedly arranged after Honorary Chairwoman Hong Ra-hee personally set up the meeting between the children of both families.
In business circles, marriages between families of major conglomerate owners are not uncommon. However, this case is drawing attention as a rare example of a marriage alliance between a founding family and a family of a former in-house professional manager.
