The Honam Semiconductor Cluster, which will involve Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, is expected to be built on a larger scale than the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex. In ruling party circles, there is speculation that the total investment by Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, including the Honam semiconductor project, could reach 2,000 trillion won.
A senior ruling party official said on the 28th that the investment scale for the Honam Semiconductor Cluster "could be even larger than Yongin." Another ruling party source said, "I heard the initial investment phase is around 1,000 trillion won," adding, "If you combine the two companies, it will exceed 1,000 trillion won for Honam semiconductor alone." That would make the Honam Semiconductor Cluster a mega-project that surpasses the Yongin cluster now under way.
If investment in the Chungcheong region and Yeongnam Region, as well as Honam, is included, along with the investment period, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are expected to invest as much as 2,000 trillion won.
President Lee Jae-myung will preside over the "National Briefing on the Three Major Mega Projects for a Great Leap Forward in the Republic of Korea" at 2 p.m. on the 29th at the Yeongbingwan State Guest House in the Blue House. At the event, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will announce detailed policy measures. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix will then unveil their massive investment plans. Given the importance of the event, Lee Jae-yong, chairman of Samsung Electronics, and Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, are also expected to attend in person. At the briefing, investment plans on an astronomical scale for regional advanced industries, centered on Samsung Electronics and SK hynix and including the Honam Semiconductor Cluster, are expected to be announced. Specifically, large-scale investment plans will be presented in three areas: semiconductors, Physical AI, and data centers. Separate briefing sessions on investment in Honam, Chungcheong, and Yeongnam will also be held.
As the opposition camp attacked the project, questioning whether the site for the Honam Semiconductor Cluster was being chosen for political reasons, President Lee pushed back strongly, saying it was "administrative guidance, not abuse of authority." He also responded on the 27th by posting a total of six messages on X in a single day.
