Death toll from Venezuela earthquake rises to 1,430; 70,000 missing

The number of dead and missing from the powerful earthquake in Venezuela has risen again.
According to AP and other reports, Jorge Rodríguez, President of the National Assembly of Venezuela, said on the 27th local time that the death toll had climbed to 1,430.
That was an increase of more than 500 from the 920 reported the previous day.
The number of injured also rose to 3,238.
In particular, the number of missing people, which had stood at around 50,000, swelled to nearly 70,000 on the day, raising the possibility that the actual death toll could be far higher than the official figure.
As of the morning of that day, the number of missing persons reported by families had reached at least 68,900.
Earlier, earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck successively off Venezuela's northern Caribbean coast on the 24th.
As the 72-hour "golden time," considered critical for rescuing survivors, draws near, Venezuelan authorities, international relief teams, and citizens are carrying out urgent rescue operations in hopes of finding even one more survivor.
