On the 25th local time, JPMorgan Chase & Co. announced a major management reshuffle, naming Doug Petno and Troy Rohrbaugh as co-presidents. Under the new appointments, Petno will serve as the sole head of the Corporate and Investment Banking division, while Rohrbaugh will oversee Chase's consumer banking business.
Marianne Lake, who had been leading the consumer banking division and was seen as the only female CEO candidate, will leave the bank. As a result, Dimon's succession race is now widely viewed as a two-way contest between Petno and Rohrbaugh.
The businesses now run by the two executives generated about 80% of JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s total net profit of $57 billion last year. In a memo to employees that day, Dimon said, "This appointment will be an important milestone in our succession planning and in developing the next generation of leaders."
On Wall Street, the move is being interpreted as a decision that gives more weight to Rohrbaugh. In a report, BofA said, "This appointment suggests that Dimon will continue leading the company for several more years," and added that "Rohrbaugh, who moved from investment banking to consumer banking, has become the front-runner in the race to succeed him."
BofA also noted that Rohrbaugh will need to prove his performance in consumer banking, a market undergoing major change as AI spreads.
Rohrbaugh, a Goldman Sachs alumnus who made his name in foreign exchange derivatives, joined JPMorgan in 2005. He later served as a key risk management executive in the markets division, and this is his first experience in retail banking.
Petno, by contrast, came from investment banking in natural resources and has served on Dimon's executive committee since 2012. He led the commercial banking division for years and emerged as a strong successor candidate after being promoted last year to co-head the CIB division, which combines corporate banking and investment banking.
