[Financial News] A woman in her 40s accused of spitting on and insulting a police officer at a rally near the Jamsil vote-counting site has been taken into custody.
Seo Beom-joon, a senior judge in charge of warrants at the Seoul Eastern District Court, conducted a pre-arrest hearing for a woman identified only by her surname Kim on the charge of obstructing official duties on the 25th. He then issued an arrest warrant, saying, "There is a risk of flight and a possibility of reoffending."
Kim is accused of asking a police officer for his name, then spitting on him and using abusive language while the officer was maintaining order in front of Gate 1-3 of the Handball Gymnasium at Olympic Park in Seoul in Seoul Songpa District on the morning of the 23rd. She was arrested at the scene on charges of obstructing official duties.
Kim reportedly said she wanted to confirm whether the officers were Korean police, and filmed their faces with her mobile phone. She was also said to have hurled abuse at the police officer's family.
After the incident, a video spread online showing the moment the officer slapped Kim on the cheek immediately after she spat at him, sparking controversy.
After completing the warrant review at around 3:44 p.m. and leaving the courthouse, Kim claimed, "I was assaulted by the police and choked by the neck," adding, "Everything about this is unfair."
Police are verifying the facts based on the circumstances before and after the arrest, as well as video footage from the scene. They also plan to review whether to launch an internal inspection depending on the findings.
