[Financial News] Morse Tan, a professor at Liberty University in the United States, who is accused of spreading false information about President Lee Jae-myung, failed to appear for a police investigation scheduled for the 24th.
According to the legal community on the 24th, Tan had been scheduled to appear at 10 a.m. that day at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency as a suspect on charges including defamation under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, but he did not show up. Tan's side submitted a request to change the appearance date to the police and said it would discuss the investigation schedule again.
Tan's side cited the police's reversal of personal information protection measures as the reason for his absence. In the request, his lawyer argued, "We intended to appear at the time agreed upon with the police, but the police violated the personal information protection measures for Professor Tan, which they had initially promised, 20 minutes before the appearance," adding, "We are forced to request a rescheduling of the appearance date."
The defense also said, "The police are responsible for failing to carry out the promised personal information protection measures," and said it would reschedule the investigation on the condition that those measures are in place.
Tan is accused of making remarks at a press conference in Washington, D.C., in June last year and elsewhere, suggesting that President Lee had been involved in a violent crime as a teenager and had been sent to a juvenile detention center. He is also accused of repeating the same claims at a church in South Korea in July last year.
After Tan entered the country on the 28th of last month and failed to comply with the police summons, police requested a travel ban from the Ministry of Justice. The ministry accepted the request and has barred Tan from leaving the country until the 30th.
Meanwhile, Tan's side said the press conference scheduled for 8 p.m. near Exits 2 and 3 of the Handball Gymnasium at Olympic Park in Seoul's Songpa District will proceed as planned.
