President Donald Trump said on the 23rd local time that inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) would be sent to Iran's nuclear facilities at the appropriate time. Although Iran denied Washington's announcement that it had accepted nuclear inspections, Trump treated the start of inspections as a done deal.
Speaking to reporters at Reading Regional Airport in Pennsylvania, Trump said that IAEA nuclear inspections in Iran were beginning and made it clear that "the inspection team will be deployed at the right time."
He also responded to Iran's claim that there were no IAEA inspection plans, saying, "They are wrong," and added, "If they are right, I will cancel the meeting right now."
The warning suggests that if Iran refuses IAEA nuclear inspections, the peace talks themselves could be put at risk.
The two sides met in Switzerland over the weekend, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on ending the war, held their first high-level talks, and agreed to continue follow-up working-level negotiations.
Earlier, U.S. Vice President JD Vance told reporters the previous day that "Iran has agreed to invite IAEA inspectors back into the country," and said inspection activities would resume this week.
Iran, however, pushed back, saying it had not accepted any new nuclear obligations.
Ismail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stressed that reports claiming Iran had agreed to let the IAEA inspect nuclear facilities struck by U.S. airstrikes were not true. He said the resumption of inspections would be decided based on future negotiations and their outcome.
