Financial News, New York City = Lee Byung-chul】 Donald Trump, the president of the United States, fueled speculation about a possible change in British leadership by saying that Prime Minister Keir Starmer would step down. British media outlets have reported that Starmer could announce his position as early as the 22nd, local time.
On the 21st, local time, Trump wrote on Truth Social, "Keir Starmer will resign as prime minister of the United Kingdom." He did not provide any specific basis for the claim. It was not clear whether Trump had obtained actual information or was simply lending weight to speculation circulating in political circles.
Britain's Press Association reported that Trump had not spoken separately with Starmer or made contact with him since the G7 Summit held in France this week.
Trump cited Starmer's policy failures as the reason for his resignation. He said, "Starmer has failed miserably on the two most important issues: immigration and energy policy," and urged him to "restart North Sea oil field development."
Trump has repeatedly pressured the British government to reverse its decision to halt new North Sea oil and gas exploration permits. He has also publicly criticized policies expanding wind power, saying they undermine energy security.
Starmer was once seen as a politician who maintained a smooth relationship with Trump and even earned the nickname "Trump whisperer." But relations between the two leaders have cooled sharply after Trump recently stepped up public criticism over the response to the war in Iran.
The Prime Minister's Office of the United Kingdom moved quickly to calm the situation. A spokesperson told CNN, reaffirming Starmer's remarks from the 20th, that "there is still much to do, and he is focused on serving the public." No further comment was offered.
Peter Kyle, the United Kingdom's business and trade secretary, also told BBC in an interview that "Starmer is spending this weekend thinking deeply about the political reality and will make the decision that is best for the country."
British media outlets are reporting that Starmer may announce his resignation or outline a future departure schedule as early as the 22nd. Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who recently led a by-election victory, is being widely mentioned as a leading candidate to become the next Labour Party leader. However, the Prime Minister's Office has not officially confirmed whether Starmer will resign.
