[Financial News] U.S. President Donald Trump has again suggested that attacks could resume if follow-up talks with Iran fail to produce an agreement.
Trump also called on Israel to secure a ceasefire with Hezbollah, the pro-Iranian armed group in Lebanon.
According to foreign media reports on the 19th local time, Trump said during a speech introducing the new presidential aircraft, Air Force One, at Joint Base Andrews near Washington, D.C., that "an agreement with Iran must be reached within 60 days" and that "otherwise, we will do something they won't like."
He added, "But I don't think that will happen. I think things are going to go very well."
He went on to say, "If we do that, oil will suddenly stop flowing out of the Strait of Hormuz very quickly," adding, "because those who own billion-dollar ships do not like missiles flying overhead, and they do not like mines scattered all over the sea." The remarks were interpreted as pressure on Iran to reach a final agreement within the 60 days specified in the previous memorandum of understanding, including measures on denuclearization.
One foreign outlet reported that Trump also demanded a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah on the same day.
A National Broadcasting Company (NBC) reporter posted on X that Trump told him in a phone call that he had said to the Israeli side, "Sometimes you just have to calm down and use your head."
Trump reportedly declined to say whether he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or with another official.
The United States and Iran had originally planned to meet in Switzerland on the 19th for follow-up negotiations, but the talks have been postponed. There were also reports that the Iranian delegation delayed its trip to Switzerland over Israel's attacks on Lebanon.
Trump's call also appears to have taken place amid concerns that Israel's lack of cooperation could disrupt implementation of the MOU.
Meanwhile, while introducing the new presidential aircraft, Trump said he plans to visit Türkiye and China this year. The China trip may refer to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen in November, while the Türkiye visit may point to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in July.
Trump also said, "I want to thank China. I asked Chinese President Xi Jinping not to get involved in Iran, and he said he would not, and he did not. That is a very good thing."
