[Financial News] After the People Power Party leadership decided to file election petitions over the June 3 local elections in Seoul and five other regions, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon criticized the move as a "political slogan to protect Jang Dong-hyeok's shaky political standing." If the election petitions filed by the party leadership are accepted, the Seoul mayoral race, which Oh won, would also have to be rerun.
According to political circles on the 16th, the People Power Party leadership held an emergency Supreme Council meeting on the 15th and decided to file election petitions for six regions: Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Incheon, Gwangju and Jeonnam, Busan, and Ulsan Metropolitan City. These are the areas where a shortage of ballots occurred. If the NEC accepts the petitions, the six elections in those regions, including the mayoral and gubernatorial races, lower-level local government head elections, local and metropolitan council elections, and proportional representation seats at both the metropolitan and local levels, would have to be held again.
After attending the National Public Policy Forum in Yeongdeungpo District, Seoul, that day, Oh told reporters, "They say the idea is not to hold a full rerun election, but to review the issue by each polling place where problems occurred," adding, "I will watch how this unfolds." He stopped short of saying more.
Oh then posted a message on social networking service X, criticizing the party leadership. He described its call for rerun elections as a "slogan to preserve its seat."
He said, "This shortage of ballots is an unprecedented and serious violation of voting rights in the history of democracy," and added, "What the party should do is conduct a thorough fact-finding investigation, punish those responsible, and pursue a fundamental reform of the election system."
He went on to say, "Yet Jang Dong-hyeok is pushing the entire party into a wasteful campaign for rerun elections," and argued that "the People Power Party should focus on uncovering the truth to the end through a National Assembly investigation and a special counsel probe, punishing those responsible, and presenting the public with reform measures for the NEC that amount to a complete overhaul."
Oh stressed, "It is deeply concerning that the golden time to restore public trust is being wasted because of one person's political calculations," adding, "The only way to properly respond to the public's expectations, as reflected in party approval ratings, is to show the competence of a responsible ruling party, not the slogans of any particular individual."
