Elon Musk became the world's first trillionaire on the 12th (local time). The milestone came after his space company SpaceX began trading at $150 per share on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange, pushing the value of Musk's stake above $766 billion, or about 1,162 trillion won.
CNBC reported that, when Tesla shares worth $280 billion are added, Musk's net wealth reached $1.05 trillion, or about 1,593 trillion won, on the day.
His net worth is greater than the combined wealth of the five richest people ranked from second to sixth in the world.
That means even if you add together the fortunes of Alphabet co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, and Meta Platforms founder Mark Zuckerberg, the total would still fall short of Musk's net worth.
Musk's net worth is also larger than the GDPs of Taiwan, Ireland, and Sweden.
His enormous wealth has also intensified concerns and criticism over income inequality and the concentration of power among a handful of Big Tech founders.
SpaceX's IPO not only made Musk the world's first trillionaire, but also turned thousands of SpaceX employees into millionaires. Some of them have become billionaires.
After the offering price was set at $135, SpaceX opened its first day of trading at $150, up 11.1% from the IPO price. The stock later surged as much as 31% to $176.52 intraday. Although it gave back some of those gains, it closed its debut session at $160.95, up 19%.
Its market capitalization reached $2.105 trillion, ranking sixth among U.S. companies by market value.
NVIDIA ranks first with a market cap of $4.96 trillion, followed by Alphabet at $4.38 trillion, Apple at $4.27 trillion, Microsoft at $2.87 trillion, and Amazon at $2.54 trillion.
Musk's Tesla ranks eighth with a market cap of $1.5 trillion.
Meanwhile, Tesla shares fell as much as 1% in midafternoon trading before reversing course and closing up 1.8% at $406.43.
