[Financial News] Reports of ChatGPT subscription fees being charged without users' consent are continuing to surface.
According to industry sources on the 12th, cases have recently been reported across online communities and social media in which charges believed to be for ChatGPT subscriptions were made without the account holder's consent. Victims say ChatGPT-related charges appeared on their card statements even though they were using the free plan or had no payment history.
The charges are said to be mostly around 29,000 won, roughly the monthly fee for ChatGPT Plus, and around 299,000 won, which appears to be an annual payment. Some statements reportedly showed descriptions such as "ChatGPT_NICE" and "OpenAI."
OpenAI, the operator of ChatGPT, said in response to the incident, "This was not a case in which ChatGPT generated charges without user consent. It has been confirmed that stolen card information was used without authorization," adding, "The payment method has been deactivated immediately."
Industry observers are focusing on the possibility that payment details such as card numbers and expiration dates were leaked externally or traded illegally.
The incident comes amid a series of data breaches and hacking attacks involving online platforms at home and abroad, further heightening user anxiety. As major platforms and online services have recently suffered repeated personal data leaks, concerns are also growing over the management of payment and account information.
