[Financial News] Jung Chung-rae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), said on the 12th that "Honam is like parents to the Democratic Party."
At the field Supreme Council meeting in Gwangju that day, Jung said, "Just as parents always embrace both gifted children and less capable children, I am always grateful to Honam, which continues to embrace and support the Democratic Party even when we fall short."
He added, "Just as Honam gave birth to and nurtured democracy, I believe Honam also gave birth to and nurtured the Democratic Party." He stressed, "We will humbly accept the public sentiment reflected in the June 3 local elections and renew ourselves with an even lower posture."
The remarks are seen as an effort to appeal to party members in Honam, including the Gwangju, Jeonnam, and North Jeolla regions. The number of voting party members in the Honam region is about 500,000, accounting for roughly 30% to 35% of the DPK's total voting membership, making it a key battleground in internal primaries.
Political observers say Jung, who will seek a second term as party leader at the August 17 party convention, is moving to strengthen support among DPK members in Honam.
