[Financial News] The United States has officially announced that it carried out airstrikes on Iran in retaliation for the downing of a U.S. military helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz.
On the 9th local time, The Times of Israel reported that United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement, "At the order of U.S. President Donald Trump, we have launched 'airstrikes in self-defense' against Iran."
The strikes were a direct response to the previous day's incident in which a U.S. Army Apache helicopter was shot down over the Strait of Hormuz near Oman.
USCENTCOM stressed that "this military operation is a proportional response to Iran's unjustifiable act of aggression," underscoring the legitimacy of the strikes.
So far, the specific targets and the extent of damage on the Iranian side have not been confirmed.
Mehr News Agency reported, citing residents, that several explosions were heard in Sirik Port and nearby villages.
CNN reported that the U.S. military helicopter was shot down in a Shahed drone attack by Iranian forces.
Iran said it did not intentionally target the U.S. military helicopter.
President Trump said the two helicopter crew members were rescued by an unmanned vessel and were safe and uninjured.
As direct military clashes between the United States and Iran have broken out in the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route, concerns are growing that instability in the Middle East will deepen further.
