[Financial News] Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared news online that the Tesla Model Y had ranked No. 1 in sales in the South Korean market, along with a Taegeukgi emoji.
On the 9th, Musk shared a post on his X account, formerly Twitter, highlighting the Model Y's sales performance in South Korea. Along with a Taegeukgi emoji, he sent a brief message saying, "South Korea is awesome."
The post he shared introduced the Model Y as the best-selling imported car in South Korea in May. It also emphasized that the result was significant in a market where domestic brands such as Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation are well established.
According to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA) on the 7th, the Model Y sold 8,762 units in South Korea last month, surpassing the Kia Sorento with 7,836 units and the Hyundai Grandeur with 5,183 units to rank first among all vehicle models.
The Model Y also delivered a dominant performance in the imported car market. Its sales were more than four times those of the BMW 5 Series, which sold 2,060 units, and in April it became the first imported single model to exceed 10,000 monthly sales.
Tesla sold a total of 10,866 vehicles last month, surpassing the combined sales of longtime imported car leaders BMW, which sold 6,555 units, and Mercedes-Benz, which sold 3,553 units. Cumulative sales from January to May this year reached 45,020 units, up 250.8% from a year earlier.
Industry observers say the Model Y's success is reshaping not only South Korea's EV market but also the broader imported car landscape.
