[The Financial News] As NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang's visit to South Korea continues to make headlines, the walnut pastries he received from a citizen have drawn online attention, leading to a flood of inquiries to the maker, Buchang Confectionery.
According to industry sources on the 8th, Huang dined the previous evening at Kkanbu Chicken Samsung Branch in Gangnam District, Seoul, where he met with SK Group executives, including Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, Noh-Jung Kwak, CEO of SK hynix, and Kim Joo-sun, president in charge of AI infrastructure at SK hynix.
Arriving at the store in a Doosan Bears uniform, Huang waved warmly to the citizens waiting for him. At that moment, a man identified as Mr. A handed him a box of walnut pastries, saying they were "Korean traditional food."
Huang opened the box on the spot, checked the contents, and smiled. He then gave the pastries to his wife, Lori Huang, and took a commemorative photo with Mr. A.
Mr. A later posted a video of the scene on his Instagram account, along with a message saying, "I have met him about nine or ten times so far, and it always felt like I only received an autograph, so this time I prepared a small gift," and "I heard he likes food, so I expressed my gratitude with a traditional Korean snack, walnut pastries."
The scene quickly spread through online communities and social media, and the product that drew attention was identified as walnut pastries from Buchang Confectionery.
Buchang Confectionery said, "We did not prepare any marketing campaign at the company level," adding that it learned of the matter only later through media reports and videos. The company is now reportedly being inundated with inquiries from consumers looking to buy the product.
Beyond the walnut pastries, Huang is also generating massive publicity for Korea's food industry.
The samgyeopsal restaurant Hyungnim Jeoyo near Hongik University station in Mapo District, Seoul, and Woo Lae Oak in Euljiro, Jung-gu, Seoul, which he visited earlier, are already seeing a booking frenzy. Sales of the HBM Chip snack that Chey had prepared as a gift for Huang at convenience stores also jumped 766% from the previous week.
Meanwhile, Huang is scheduled to visit LG Twin Towers in Yeouido, Seoul, on the 8th, followed by Seoul National University, Hyundai Motor Group Yangjae Headquarters, and Naver 1784. He is expected to depart late on the night of the 8th or on the morning of the 9th via Gimpo Airport.
