[Financial News] President Lee Jae-myung said on the 8th that a neutral special prosecutor could also be an option in connection with the so-called Special Prosecutor for Fabricated Prosecution pushed by the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK).
At a press conference marking his first anniversary in office at Yeongbingwan State Guest House that day, President Lee was asked for his position on the special prosecutor bill for fabricated prosecution and said, "Just follow the law and common sense." He added, "At the very least, the truth must be uncovered."
Regarding the prosecution's indictments, President Lee said, "If something is wrong, cancel it. If not, leave it alone." He added, "I have my own subjective view, but even setting that aside, there are quite a few things that objectively appear to be problematic."
He continued, "We can proceed based on the results of the fact-finding. It is not that difficult." He added, "If something was done wrong, just correct it. They made it unnecessarily complicated."
On how to uncover the truth, he mentioned both a joint investigation headquarters involving the Prosecution Service and Police and a special prosecutor. President Lee explained, "Fact-finding can be handled by forming a large Task Force (TF) within the joint investigation headquarters led by the Prosecution Service and Police." He said, "That is the usual approach."
However, he said a special prosecutor appointed by the National Assembly could also be an option if concerns over neutrality are taken into account. President Lee said, "Alternatively, a neutral special prosecutor appointed by the National Assembly could do it." He added, "From my perspective, honestly, it would be better to set up a large special investigation team that I can direct. But from the public's or the opposition parties' perspective, wouldn't it be better for a neutral special prosecutor to handle it?"
President Lee added, "We cannot avoid doing it, and we will do it somehow, but the National Assembly should consider and decide which method would be most appropriate." He said, "Wouldn't it be much better for the National Assembly to decide?"
