[Financial News] A powerful earthquake struck waters near Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines on the 8th, prompting authorities to issue an emergency evacuation order.
Foreign media, citing the German Research Centre for Geosciences, reported that a magnitude 8.2 quake hit Mindanao Island. The hypocenter was very shallow, at a depth of 10 km.
GFZ initially reported the quake as magnitude 7.3, but later revised it upward to 8.2 after further analysis.
An official at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said tsunami waves more than 1 meter above normal tide levels were expected, and advised coastal residents in some southern Philippine provinces to move immediately to higher ground or farther inland.
The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone often called the Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and volcanic activity are frequent.
The U.S. tsunami warning system also issued an immediate tsunami threat alert.
Hawaii-based broadcaster KHON-TV reported that it was too early to determine whether the tsunami would threaten Hawaii.
