Yonhap News [Financial News] On Memorial Day, June 6, President Lee Jae-myung stated, "Along with honoring those who defended the community, punishing those who betrayed it for selfish gain is also a very important duty given to us who are alive.

" Furthermore, President Lee pledged to provide commensurate respect to the citizens who are protecting the present, just as they did in the past. President Lee said, "Thanks to the dedication of military personnel, firefighters, police officers, coast guards, and prison guards, the people can enjoy their daily lives with peace of mind today.
" "We will provide solid support so that citizens in uniform can devote themselves solely to their inherent duties for the nation and the people without any shortcomings," he said. He added, "We will definitely improve the support system for injured soldiers so that those who were unfortunately injured during military service can be treated as veterans immediately upon discharge," and explained, "We are now providing dependent family allowances to everyone, including those injured by natural disasters and those in the military and police at the Grade 7 level, who have been relatively neglected until now.
" President Lee stated, "On the occasion of the 71st Memorial Day, I honor the noble sacrifices of the martyrs and fallen heroes who gave their lives for the Republic of Korea. I also extend my deep respect to the national meritorious service personnel who dedicated themselves to everyone and to their bereaved families.
" He continued, "Joining us today are the bereaved families of the late Sergeant Lee Jae-seok, who gave his life jacket to save others and died in the line of duty at sea, and the late Warrant Officers Jeong Sang-geun and Jang Hee-seong, who did not let go of the helicopter controls until the very end to protect the safety of the people. " [He/She] continued, "Independence activists dedicated their lives to reclaiming our stolen country.
Patriotic martyrs fought through the smoke of battle for the nation and its people. Democratic citizens built the Republic of Korea, a powerful democratic nation, by confronting the violence of dictatorships armed with guns and swords.
" She added, "Without their noble sacrifices and devotion, the Republic of Korea as it exists today, which the world envies, would never have existed, nor would the free and peaceful daily life we enjoy today have been impossible. " President Lee emphasized, "Honoring the spirit of our ancestors and showing them due respect is a historical and social duty that we, the living, ought to fulfill.
Respect for their dedication is the driving force that sustains the national community and propels it forward. " She continued, "If dedication for all is ignored, who will step forward for the community in the face of future crises? Therefore, special sacrifices made for all must be followed by special compensation and respect commensurate with them.
" She also mentioned that respect and compensation are not merely words, but actions. "The Government of Popular Sovereignty is steadily fulfilling the promises made here on Memorial Day one year ago.
The amendment to the Independence Meritorious Service Act, aimed at expanding the scope of compensation for the bereaved families of independence meritorious service personnel, is set to pass the National Assembly this year and take effect next year," he said.
"We are also preparing to designate quasi-veterans hospitals in the Gangwon and Jeju regions, which currently lack veterans hospitals, to provide the best possible medical benefits.
I assure you that we will make promises we can keep and will certainly fulfill them to repay this noble dedication for the sake of everyone.
" Meanwhile, 3,000 people attended the 71st Memorial Day ceremony on this day, including national meritorious service personnel, bereaved families, government officials, and uniformed service members.
