[Financial News] A rally calling for a by-election continues at the Jamsil counting center, where protesters are denouncing the alleged shortage of ballots in the June 3 local elections.
According to Financial News reporting on the 6th, about 1,000 people, based on an unofficial police estimate, were protesting at 10 a.m. at the SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium in Songpa District, Seoul, which is serving as the counting center.
Participants holding the Taegeukgi and placards reading "Violation of voting rights" and "Dismantle the NEC" repeatedly chanted "A by-election" and sang the national anthem while keeping watch to prevent ballot boxes from being removed.
The crowd, which had swelled to about 6,000 the previous night, had fallen to around 500 by 7 a.m. on the 6th, but it began growing again after daybreak. Meanwhile, 20 to 30 NEC officials who finished counting at around 3 p.m. the previous day were still trapped inside the center.
A police official said, "It is difficult to enter the building, so dozens of riot police officers have been deployed at the main entrance to the gymnasium." No physical clashes between police and protesters have been reported.
No single group is leading the protest on site, and many of the participants are in their 10s to 30s. At one point, they were seen encouraging one another by sharing water, gimbap and portable battery packs. The protest began around 10 a.m. the previous day, when ballot boxes from Jamsil 7-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul, which had experienced a shortage of ballots, were moved.
