[Financial News] Jang Dong-hyeok, leader of the People Power Party, said on the 5th that a state investigation and a special prosecutor should be launched over the ballot shortage in the June 3 local elections. He also strongly urged the National Assembly to form a "Special Committee on Election Commission Reform."
In a post on social networking service (SNS) that day, Jang wrote, "The ballot shortage incident has destroyed the fairness of the election. In itself, it is a serious threat to liberal democracy," adding, "Depending on how this situation is resolved, the future of democracy in the Republic of Korea could be determined."
He said, "Lee Jae-myung said there were 'flaws that are not easy to understand' and expressed 'deep regret,'" adding, "Yet police were deployed to remove citizens and forcibly take out ballot boxes. I express serious regret."
He continued, "Vote counting should have been stopped. The removal of ballot boxes should have been blocked. I am sorry and ashamed that nothing was prevented," adding, "I will fight to the end with citizens. We must uncover the truth and hold those responsible to account."
Jang said, "Lee Jae-myung also instructed officials to 'clearly identify the causes of the problem and clearly hold people accountable,'" adding, "The Democratic Party should have no reason to oppose this either. I strongly demand an early state investigation and the pursuit of a special prosecutor."
He also wrote, "Chairperson Rho Tae-ak, the Secretary-General, and all election commissioners must resign and take responsibility for this incident," adding, "If they refuse, our party will immediately move to impeach them."
He further said, "If the Democratic Party obstructs the truth-finding process and election commission reform, it will amount to an admission that it is an accomplice to the NEC," adding, "Public anger will burn Lee Jae-myung and the Democratic Party."
