\r\n[Financial News] Han Dong-hoon, an independent candidate, won the by-election for the Busan Buk-gu-gap constituency. After being expelled from the People Power Party, he succeeded in his gamble to run as an independent.
As the Jang Dong-hyeok-led People Power Party leadership is likely to step down after its defeat in the June 3 local elections, Han Dong-hoon is expected to rally reform-minded figures and seek the next party leadership if he enters the National Assembly.
According to the National Election Commission (NEC) on the 4th, Han was confirmed elected in the Busan Buk-gu-gap by-election after defeating Ha Jung-woo of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK). He secured a seat in the National Assembly on his own, even without a unified candidacy with Park Min-sik of the People Power Party.
Han was expelled from the People Power Party, where he had served as party leader, earlier this year over allegations of manipulation on the Party Members' Bulletin Board. He then made a surprise move to run as an independent in the Busan Buk-gu-gap by-election, making a triumphant return. With that political momentum, he is expected to move to take control of the People Power Party. Many observers say he will seek the next party leadership after rejoining the party.
Han said, "I sincerely thank the great citizens of Buk-gu who opened the path to Buk-gu's future and the reconstruction of conservatism with this historic victory." He added, "I will develop Buk-gu, rebuild conservatism, and check the runaway Lee Jae-myung administration to restore balance to the Republic of Korea."
