Synology on-premises software environment
【Financial News Taipei, Taiwan = Reporter Choi Hye-rim】 Synology is moving beyond its long-standing image as a leader in network-attached storage (NAS) and targeting the enterprise AI platform market. By combining enterprise storage, software, AI, and security solutions, the company is accelerating efforts to build an on-premises AI ecosystem that covers everything from data storage to utilization and protection. On the 3rd local time, the Synology booth at Hall 1 of the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, where COMPUTEX Taipei 2026 was being held, did not look like a typical exhibition space for a NAS specialist. The first products to stand out were the flagship storage system PAS7700 and the scale-out object storage GS3400, both aimed at enterprise customers.
PAS7700 is an enterprise-grade NVMe storage system based on an active-active architecture, designed to improve stability and service continuity. GS3400 is built to efficiently store and manage large volumes of unstructured data. It is also suited for large-scale AI and data processing environments.
In response to growing AI demand, Synology plans to support GPU expansion in its enterprise storage products. The goal is to create an environment where AI functions can run directly inside the storage system, rather than treating it as a simple storage device.
At the booth demonstration area, Synology unveiled a range of AI features based on its operating system, DiskStation Manager (DSM). The AI management tool, DSM Agent, answers questions in a conversational way and guides users through system settings, the causes of failures, and recovery procedures. It also carried out commands such as, "Check the storage capacity status and record it in a sheet." In other words, it acts as an AI assistant that supports administrative work beyond simple question-and-answer tasks.
AI has also been added to Synology Office Suite. Just as with ChatGPT, users can type a query on the screen and search for documents, images, audio, and video files stored in Drive. The ChatPlus messaging solution automatically summarized and translated conversations, while the Synology Meet video conferencing solution translated and summarized meetings in real time.
With only hardware deployment, Synology provides an environment where users can access business software such as collaboration tools, email, and video conferencing without separate subscriptions. The advantage of this strategy is that it allows the company to secure AI utilization, data control, and an all-in-one ecosystem at the same time.
Synology's on-premises AI strategy was emphasized again during a press briefing after the booth tour. Catherine Zhang, Product Marketing Manager at Synology, said, "Synology's DSM is evolving beyond an operating system that simply supports storage into a platform that also supports data protection, productivity, and AI operations." She added, "This year, we plan to introduce GPU-supported models so that companies can more easily use local AI models."
