[Financial News] The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said that differences in weather information shown on the default weather apps of Samsung Electronics' Galaxy smartphones and Apple's iPhones occur because each app uses different data sources.
In a short video posted on its official YouTube channel on the 31st of last month, titled "Galaxy phones vs. iPhones: Why is the weather different?" forecaster Lee Won-gil explained, "Even in the same area, weather information on iPhones and Galaxies can appear differently." He added, "That is because smartphone weather apps provide services using different weather forecast data."
Samsung Galaxy receives data from The Weather Channel, a global weather service that processes information based on KMA data. By contrast, the iPhone uses Apple Weather, Apple's own database built on data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other sources.
Lee explained, "Because smartphones are products distributed worldwide in the global market, each manufacturer adopts numerical weather prediction model results from global private weather providers or some national meteorological agencies to deliver weather information."
Numerical weather prediction is the process of forecasting future weather by solving dynamic and physical equations that describe atmospheric motion and change. The program that runs these calculations on supercomputers is called a numerical weather prediction model.
South Korea, which previously relied on models borrowed from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the UK Met Office, achieved technological independence in April 2020 by introducing the Korean Integrated Model (KIM), developed with its own technology. South Korea is the ninth country in the world to possess an independent numerical weather prediction model.
KIM now not only compares and analyzes domestic and international weather data, but also reflects Korea's complex terrain and regional characteristics to produce real-time forecasts.
Lee advised, "If you want to check the most accurate domestic weather information in real time, using KMA's official app, KMA Weather Alert, is also a good option, as it immediately reflects the detailed analysis data of KMA forecasters."
