[The Financial News] On June 1, two days before the 9th nationwide local elections, a campaign worker for Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) candidate Lee Won-taek caused a disturbance by crawling under the campaign truck of independent candidate Kim Kwan-young and lying down.
According to political sources, around 8:30 a.m. that day, the worker, identified only as A, went under Kim's campaign truck at an intersection in Hyoja-dong, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeonbuk.
With about half of his body under the rear wheel area, A lay there and created a dangerous situation in an instant.
The incident came amid criticism that the Jeonbuk governor race was drifting away from policy competition and toward allegations and mutual attacks.
The two sides were reportedly continuing to clash over banner slogans and various allegations in the final stretch of the campaign.
A was eventually persuaded to come out from under the truck by Kim's campaign workers and campaign workers for DPK Jeonju Mayor candidate Cho Ji-hoon, who were at the scene.
Kim's camp pointed out to A, "If the campaign truck had moved even a little, A, who was lying near the rear wheel, could have been seriously injured," and added, "No matter how fierce an election is, how could anyone do something like this?"
A reportedly explained why he went under Kim's campaign truck, saying, "I asked them several times to move aside, but they would not listen."
