[Financial News, New York = Reporter Lee Byung-chul]President Donald Trump of the United States held a meeting in the White House Situation Room over a proposed agreement to end the three-month-long war with the Islamic Republic of Iran, but he delayed final approval and entered last-minute deliberations. Trump had set conditions for a deal, including Iran's abandonment of nuclear weapons, the full opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the disposal of highly enriched uranium. Iran, however, pushed back sharply, saying the terms were different from the draft agreement.
According to CNBC and other outlets on the 29th local time, Trump held a meeting at the White House Situation Room to discuss whether to approve a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a ceasefire with Iran and the resumption of nuclear talks, but he did not announce a final decision.
Earlier, Trump said on Truth Social that he would make the final decision in the Situation Room and disclosed the conditions for approving the deal.
Trump said Iran must promise never to possess nuclear weapons and that the Strait of Hormuz must be fully opened immediately, without tolls. He also said the U.S. maritime blockade against Iran in the Gulf of Oman would be lifted.
He also claimed that highly enriched uranium buried under the rubble of Iran's nuclear facilities after last year's airstrikes would be excavated and destroyed jointly by the United States, Iran, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He said, "No money will move until further notice," and added, "Less important matters have already been agreed upon."
Iran immediately rejected the remarks. Fars, a state-affiliated Iranian outlet, said the conditions Trump mentioned conflict with the actual contents of the agreement.
Fars said, "There is no clause in the agreement for toll-free passage through the Strait of Hormuz," and added that it does not include any provisions on the disposal or dismantling of nuclear materials.
It also argued that "the core of the agreement is the immediate payment of $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets," and said it would not engage in further talks unless the funds are released.
The White House did not issue an official response.
