[Financial News] As the culture of treating pets like family has taken root, the unusual "pet dog class president election," which closely resembles a human election, is emerging as a distinctive trend.
Interest in related events has recently grown after Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC)'s entertainment show "I Live Alone" revealed that webtoon artist and broadcaster Kian84's dog was elected class president at a pet dog kindergarten.
A pet dog kindergarten is a facility that provides socialization training and care services for puppies. Many of these places also conduct entrance tests to check whether the dogs can perform basic commands such as "stay" and "sit."
Some of these kindergartens hold class president elections for the puppies.
The voting methods vary widely. In some places, candidate puppies are seated side by side, and the one that attracts the most attention from the other dogs is chosen as class president. Others place ballots with the candidates' names in front of the puppies and let them pick one.
In some kindergartens, the puppy that maintains the "stay" or "sit" position the longest is elected class president.
Pet owners put a lot of effort into campaign pledges and posters. Promises that closely resemble real elections, such as "longer free play time" and "snack sharing," also appear.
The spread of these unusual events is being interpreted as a result of the growing perception that pets are family members.
According to the "2025 Korea Pet Report" by KB Financial Group Management Research Institute, 87.2% of the 5.91 million pet-owning households in South Korea as of the end of 2024 agreed with the statement that "pets are members of the family."
Analysts say the expansion of these unusual events reflects pet owners' hopes that their dogs will get along well with peers and enjoy a better quality of life.
