[Financial News] A passenger has sparked public outrage after being caught removing dead skin from her feet with her bare feet propped up on her knees inside a cramped airplane cabin.
On the 29th, Yonhap News TV reported, citing News.com in Australia, that a recent video posted by a traveler showing the woman seated next to him starting to peel dead skin from her bare feet during a flight has fueled a debate over public etiquette and hygiene.
According to the traveler, the woman in the middle seat of a three-seat row casually began picking at the dead skin on her toes with her bare feet resting on her knees. Although people were seated on both sides of her, she reportedly ignored them and focused on removing the dead skin.
Experts who saw the story unanimously criticized the woman's behavior.
Dr. Kate Edwards, a podiatrist in Sydney, warned that "fungus and bacteria can spread to other places."
She added, "If you walk around a plane barefoot and then put on warm, dark, damp socks or shoes, these things can multiply almost instantly." She also advised, "If you have to touch your bare feet for any reason, you should always use hand sanitizer first."
Etiquette expert Kate Huesler said that "grooming your feet on a plane is absolutely not normal and is unacceptable."
She noted that "because an airplane is a shared space, basic consideration for others must apply," but added that "the decline in public etiquette is not intentional; it is the result of a culture of excessive comfort and convenience."
She went on to say that "these behaviors stem from a lack of social awareness" and that "the boundary between the living room and public transportation has become blurred." She emphasized that "even small acts of consideration can help make public spaces civilized again."
