\r[Financial News] Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, said Taiwan is the "epicenter of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution" and announced plans to invest as much as $150 billion a year, or about 207 trillion won. He also teased the upcoming launch of a new product that he said will surprise the world.
According to Taiwan's Central News Agency and other outlets on the 27th local time, Huang made the sweeping investment pledge at the groundbreaking ceremony for NVIDIA Taiwan Headquarters in Taipei. He said investment in Taiwan had stood at around $10 billion to $15 billion a year four or five years ago, but would now rise above $100 billion and reach as much as $150 billion. Huang stressed that "chips, advanced packaging, systems and AI supercomputers are all made in Taiwan," adding that "Taiwan will continue to serve as the world's technology manufacturing hub for a long time to come."
About 4,000 people are expected to work at NVIDIA Taiwan Headquarters, which has broken ground with a target of going into operation in 2030. NVIDIA will use the site as a base to further deepen its close ties with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC), the world's No. 1 foundry. It will also expand cooperation with local AI server makers in Taiwan, including Foxconn, Wistron Corporation and Quanta Computer. Huang said the second half of the year will be extremely busy because of demand for Grace Blackwell and the next-generation Vera Rubin platform. He added that the second half of this year will be the best six months ever for both NVIDIA and Taiwan.
He also made a surprise remark that fueled market expectations. Huang said, "There is one remarkable new product that I have not yet shown to anyone," suggesting another announcement will come soon. As for concerns that TSMC may lack advanced process capacity, he dismissed them, saying, "TSMC is the best company in the world" and "TSMC and NVIDIA can succeed together."
Huang identified electricity as a key resource in the AI era. He said, "Just as people need food, AI workers need electricity," and noted that growth in the energy industry will be directly tied to Taiwan's economy. Kung Ming-hsin, Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs, responded by saying, "There are no concerns about power supply through 2034," and added, "We will fully prepare the power infrastructure in line with NVIDIA's investment plans."
\rMeanwhile, as tensions between the United States and China intensify, Huang is reportedly set to join the advisory board of the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University in China. The board already includes Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
