[Financial News] Cable News Network (CNN) singled out 'Puffer Fish Soup,' one of Busan's signature local dishes, as "the world's most dangerous broth." It also noted that the global K-culture boom is drawing more foreign tourists to Korea, with travel now expanding beyond the Seoul metropolitan area to regional hubs such as Busan.
CNN recently described Busan as South Korea's second-largest city and an attractive seaside destination, saying it has become a center for puffer fish cuisine. It added that the Mipo coastal area is so densely packed with specialty restaurants that it is known as Puffer Fish Village.
The outlet then called Puffer Fish Soup "one of the world's most dangerous broths." At the same time, it highlighted Korea's unique culinary culture, which turns highly toxic ingredients into dishes that are both safe and rich in flavor.
It also emphasized that "puffer fish is not an ingredient just anyone can cook," noting that the Korean government operates a strict system that allows only certified experts, who have passed a national qualification exam, to prepare it. As a result, travelers can enjoy the delicacy with peace of mind.
The report also pointed to an intriguing historical link between Busan's puffer fish cuisine and a major episode in modern Korean politics. It referred to the 1992 election wiretapping scandal known as the Chowon Bokguk incident, in which regional officials from the Yeongnam area gathered ahead of the presidential election and plotted state-backed election interference.
Chowon Bokguk, the setting of the incident, is a well-known puffer fish restaurant in Busan with more than half a century of history. CNN described the restaurant as "a place with political symbolism comparable to the Watergate scandal in Washington, D.C." It added, however, that it is now better known for the history and value of its food than for its past political controversy.
CNN said that as global interest in Korea continues to rise, tourists are moving beyond Seoul in search of local attractions. Busan, with its distinctive cuisine, mild climate and fresh seafood, is emerging as a new alternative for foreign travelers.
