[The Financial News] President Lee Jae Myung said on the 28th, "I hope the southern region, including South Gyeongsang and Jeonnam, which has key infrastructure, will be developed into a comprehensive aerospace belt."
In his opening remarks at the 35th senior aides meeting, held at the main building of Cheong Wa Dae, Lee said, "Aerospace is a future strategic industry with enormous growth potential, bringing together cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, communications, materials and precision machinery. It is also an area that countries around the world are closely watching."
He noted that major countries, as well as private companies such as SpaceX, are engaged in an all-out race to secure leadership in the industry.
He added that Korea has already achieved significant results despite its late start, including the successful launch of the fourth Nuri (KSLV-II) rocket in November, which was prepared jointly by the public and private sectors. "We still have a long way to go, but based on what we have achieved so far, we must further strengthen the path toward becoming a global aerospace powerhouse," he emphasized.
To that end, Lee called for bold investment in research and development. He said, "We must quickly secure world-class technology across related fields, including launch vehicles, satellites and ground equipment."
He also stressed the role of the private sector and local governments. Lee said, "Another key player in aerospace is the private sector and local regions," and added, "We need to greatly strengthen public-private cooperation so that a Korean version of SpaceX can emerge."
He also said, "Based on the technologies acquired during the development of the KAI KF-21 Boramae, it would be good to accelerate the development of advanced dual-use engines and also pursue the development of civilian aircraft."
Lee added, "I will actively support efforts to make aerospace a new foundation for our economy and security."
