\r\n[The Financial News] President Lee Jae-myung said on the 28th, "There are still entrenched bad habits in our society that value money over safety, and efficiency over safety. A thorough investigation is needed into whether the accident at the Seosomun Overpass demolition site and the missing rebar problem at Samseong station on the Great Train eXpress (GTX) line also stemmed from such problems."
At the senior aides meeting he chaired that day at Cheong Wa Dae, Lee said, "These cases are especially serious because they involve the public sector, which should be at the forefront of protecting public safety. Relevant agencies must quickly determine the facts and, based on the results, hold everyone strictly accountable, regardless of rank."
"Many of you will remember the Guui Station accident, where a young worker died after being struck by a train while working alone on a platform. Today marks the 10th anniversary of that tragedy," Lee said. "Even after that day, heartbreaking incidents have continued to repeat, with many workers losing their lives at workplaces that should be the safest."
He added, "Thanks to public attention and efforts on the ground, the number of industrial accident deaths in the first quarter of this year has fallen sharply, but fatalities are still too high. Money can never be worth more than life. We must remember that safety is the most efficient investment. The government will devote all of its capabilities to protecting lives and saving lives."
