[Financial News] North Korea pushed back against the denuclearization demand from the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), the security partnership among the United States, Japan, Australia, and India, saying, "There will never, ever be denuclearization."
According to the Korean Central News Agency on the 28th, a spokesperson for North Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in response to a reporter's question, "Let us make it clear once again that the 'denuclearization' of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will never, ever happen."
The spokesperson added, "By insisting on the exercise of our state's legitimate sovereign rights while talking about some kind of 'denuclearization,' the Quad only proves that it is a political and diplomatic tool serving the United States' strategy for unipolar dominance."
The remarks came after the Quad foreign ministers issued a joint statement following their meeting in New Delhi, India, on the 26th local time, saying, "We reaffirm our commitment to the complete denuclearization of North Korea."
In that joint statement, the Quad foreign ministers also called on North Korea to comply with its obligations under UNSC resolutions and condemned its illegal ballistic missile and weapons of mass destruction (WMD) development.
Although they did not name China directly, they also issued a warning against taking hardline measures, citing the situation in the East China Sea and the South China Sea.
In response, North Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized the statement, saying it "grossly distorted the immediate and urgent challenges and threats facing Asia-Pacific countries and openly exposed hostile intent aimed at specific countries."
