[Financial News] North Korea's surprise provocation the previous day, in which it fired multiple projectiles into the Yellow Sea, has been revealed as a new composite weapons system that can simultaneously launch ballistic missiles and multiple rocket rounds from a single launcher, modeled after the Republic of Korea Armed Forces' K239 Chunmoo multiple launch rocket system. The Korean Central News Agency claimed the test launch of a new weapon for attacks on South Korea was successful. In response, the private security think tank Korea Defense & Security Forum (KODEF) assessed that North Korea has begun putting fire-control technology and modular loading methods into full-scale use for its Front Corps. The move is seen as part of North Korea's diversified tactics to threaten South Korea and neutralize the combined South Korea-U.S. interception network.■ The visible shift toward a Pyongyang-led strategy to devastate South Korea and a surprise mixed launch of multiple projectilesOn the 27th, the Korean Central News Agency, North Korea's main external propaganda outlet, said on the 26th that the Missile General Bureau and the Academy of Defence Sciences had conducted an important weapons test. The Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff also announced that around 1 p.m. the previous day it detected multiple projectiles, including short-range ballistic missiles, launched into the Yellow Sea from the Jeongju area in North Pyongan Province. The missiles flew about 80 kilometers, and the South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities are conducting a detailed analysis of the exact specifications.
The agency also said the test evaluated the power of a special-mission warhead for a short-range or close-range tactical ballistic missile, the performance of the ultra-precise autonomous guidance and navigation system of the extended-range 240mm guided rocket, and the accuracy of the tactical cruise missile's AI guidance. It added that the test launch was part of a plan to modernize artillery and missile forces under the Five-Year National Defense Development Plan, and that it tested the newly developed Lightweight Multipurpose Missile Launch System and the Multiple-Launch Tactical Cruise Missile Weapon System. The agency reported that Kim Jong Un, who observed the test launch, expressed great satisfaction that key advanced defense science and technology had been introduced into a live weapons test.

The system's biggest tactical feature is that a single wheeled launcher can carry standardized pod-style compartments, allowing it to mount and operate 240mm multiple launch rocket rounds and Hwasong-11Ra tactical ballistic missiles at the same time. By introducing a method in which the entire pod of multiple rocket rounds is swapped out by crane, North Korea has dramatically shortened the loading time that had long been a chronic weakness of its aging 240mm multiple rocket system and maximized combat endurance. In particular, North Korea's claim that it has achieved ultra-precise autonomous guidance using satellite navigation and inertial guidance suggests a major improvement in the strike accuracy of its long-range artillery aimed at South Korea.
KODEF Secretary-General Shin Jong-woo said that, based on North Korea's claim that it tested a special-mission warhead, the launch likely involved a cluster-munition-type drop test capable of devastating a wide area. He added that if these systems are deployed in earnest to artillery units of the Front Corps, the effective operational range of North Korea's forward artillery, which had previously been limited to around 70 kilometers, could expand sharply to under 200 kilometers.
If new short-range tactical cruise missiles with a range of about 100 km, which fly on jet engines after the solid-fuel booster separates, are also densely deployed to front-line units in a multiple-launch configuration, the Seoul metropolitan area and the North West Islands will fall directly within range of low-altitude mixed-fire strikes. Shin said that, under Kim Jong Un's order to modernize front-line units, the diversification of strike assets aimed at South Korea is moving very quickly, and he stressed that the military authorities urgently need to strengthen interception and detection capabilities.
