[Financial News] A hair dryer left running by a hotel guest to dry sneakers and then abandoned for hours nearly caused a major fire, in a frightening incident. Without the quick thinking and swift response of staff on site, the entire 240-room building could have been exposed to fire risk.
A post on the social networking service (SNS) Threads, believed to have been written by a hotel employee identified as A, recently spread online. The post said, "I almost ended up on the 9 o'clock news."
A said he first heard an unidentified noise near the outdoor smoking area and suspected a burst water pipe.
At the time, a guest room window was open, so the sound escaped outside. But it could not be heard in the hallway, prompting the staff member to run through every floor in search of the source.
After checking, it turned out that a hair dryer had been running on its own for as long as five hours right beside a bed in one room.
The cause was a foreign guest who left the room with the dryer on to dry wet shoes.
By the time it was found, the dryer had already melted from the heat.
A ended the post by warning guests to pay close attention to the use of electric heating devices in hotel rooms, saying, "Never leave a hair dryer, curling iron, or charger plugged in and go out at a hotel. It's really dangerous."
In response to one netizen's question, "Did you file for damages?" A replied, "We only asked them to reimburse the cost of the hair dryer."
The guest reportedly said through a translation app, "I will be more careful next time."
Netizens who saw the story criticized the guest's behavior as beyond common sense and breathed a sigh of relief.
Some users vented their frustration, saying, "I wonder if they do this at home too. There is really no excuse," while others reacted with relief, saying, "What a huge relief," "It feels like their ancestors helped," and "That was really a close call."
