North Korea said it had successfully conducted a test launch to assess the power of a short-range ground-to-ground ballistic missile with a cluster warhead. On April 20, the Korean Central News Agency reported, "The Missile General Bureau conducted a test launch on the 19th to evaluate the power of the warhead of the improved ground-to-ground tactical ballistic missile 'Hwasong-11D.'" [Financial News] The Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff (ROK JCS) said on the 26th that North Korea had launched an unidentified projectile into the Yellow Sea. The ROK JCS is analyzing the projectile's specifications and range. The launch, believed to involve a ballistic missile, comes 37 days after the previous one and is counted as North Korea's eighth provocation this year.
Earlier, North Korea fired several short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) into the East Sea from the Sinpo area of South Hamgyong Province on the 19th of last month. The following day, on the 20th, the Korean Central News Agency said the projectile tested the previous day was called the 'Hwasong-11D.' It claimed that five of the projectiles were equipped with a so-called cluster warhead and struck the 12.5 to 13-hectare area of Alseom, 136 kilometers away, with very high density.
At the time, China formed a large fleet centered on the aircraft carrier Liaoning (CV-16) in response to the annual multinational joint military exercise Balikatan 2026, led by the United States, Japan, and the Philippines and joined by several Pacific allies. The fleet carried out patrol operations after passing through the East Sea, then through an international waterway between Hokkaido and Honshu in Japan. It was reported that Russian Navy patrol ships, submarines, and tugboats joined in, and that North Korea also responded by firing several SRBMs into the East Sea.
The Korean Central News Agency released footage of the launch of the 'Hwasong-11D' ballistic missile on April 20. The 'Hwasong-11D' missile is believed to have been launched from the coast of Sinpo, South Hamgyong Province, the previous day. Screenshot from the Korean Central News Agency.
