According to major foreign media outlets on the 23rd local time, dozens of gunshots were heard at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW near the White House in the United States. Trump was staying at the White House at the time, but was reported to be unharmed.
Agents from the United States Secret Service (USSS), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and police officers have cordoned off the scene and are investigating the circumstances of the incident. A USSS official said, "The incident occurred around 6 p.m., and we began investigating after receiving reports of gunfire."
The USSS press office said on X, formerly Twitter, that it was aware of a shooting at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW and was working with personnel on the scene to verify the information. FBI Director Kash Patel also said the FBI had been dispatched to assist the USSS and would release additional information as soon as it was confirmed.
Fox News reported that the shooter fired three rounds from a handgun toward the White House, and USSS agents returned fire and subdued the suspect. No law enforcement officers were injured, but a bystander at the scene was reportedly shot and taken to a nearby hospital.
Reporters who were on the North Lawn of the White House at the time of the incident were urgently evacuated to the briefing room. CNN said its reporters also heard gunshots, and that USSS agents shouted to them, "Shots fired, get down!" before quickly moving them to the briefing room. The USSS briefly locked down the White House and ordered reporters outside the building to evacuate.
Gun-related incidents have also continued near the White House recently. On the 4th, a suspect carrying a firearm opened fire on law enforcement officers at an intersection southeast of the Washington Monument, triggering a shootout. On the 25th of last month, an armed man fired shots and tried to break through a security checkpoint near the banquet hall at the Washington Hilton, but was subdued. Trump, who was inside the banquet hall at the time, evacuated safely.
