According to CNN and other U.S. broadcasters on the 23rd local time, the United States Secret Service (USSS) began an investigation after receiving reports of gunfire in the area northwest of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., outside the White House complex. Reporters waiting on the North Lawn at the time were urgently moved inside the briefing room, which was briefly locked down.
Reporters at the scene said they heard "what sounded like dozens of gunshots," and some testified that the shots appeared to come from the direction of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building inside the White House complex. USSS agents immediately ordered the press to take cover, and armed personnel were deployed heavily around the area.
CNN reported that one of its own reporters also heard the gunshots directly, and said the White House area was effectively under lockdown for about 15 minutes afterward. The FBI also joined the response and said it was assisting the USSS. However, the exact location of the shots, the suspect, and whether there were any casualties have not yet been confirmed.
At the time, President Donald Trump was believed to be inside the White House, and the White House was still assessing the situation. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the incident and the cause of the gunfire.
