The People Power Party (PPP) on the 23rd unveiled local election pledges for Honam and Jeju, where support for the Democratic Party of Korea is strong. At the center of the plan was a push to designate Gwangyang-si as a future advanced materials National Industrial Complex.
The PPP Policy Committee first proposed pledges for the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City, including the development of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and energy industries, as well as transportation and tourism infrastructure. It also laid out specific promises for each city, county and district.
The proposals focused on expanding Gwangju's AI and auto industries, helping Yeosu transition its petrochemical sector, supporting the steel industry in Gwangyang, and accelerating the expansion of transportation networks such as Muan International Airport, railways and roads.
A key proposal was to build future advanced materials National Industrial Complexes in Gwangyang and Suncheon. The party said this has long been a regional aspiration in Jeonnam, and the policy committee believes it could help lay the foundation for Honam's future industries.
For Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, the party plans to swiftly advance legislation aligned with Hyundai Motor Company's 9 trillion won investment in Saemangeum and secure future growth engines by creating a hydrogen-focused National Industrial Complex in Wanju County.
For Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, it proposed building a smart grid advanced city near Jeju Second Airport to strengthen the competitiveness of future industries.
