\r\n[Financial News] The Democratic Party of Korea is closely watching whether Park Min-sik, the People Power Party (PPP) candidate, and Han Dong-hoon, an independent candidate, will unify their candidacies in the by-election for members of the National Assembly in Busan Buk-gu-gap constituency.
Cho Seung-rae, the party's Secretary-General, held a press briefing at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea on the day and said, "The overall trend in the Busan Buk-gu-gap race still appears to be maintaining a lead for Ha Jung-woo, the Democratic Party candidate," while noting that whether conservative candidates unify remains a key variable.
Cho also analyzed the race, saying that even if unification does not happen, conservative voters may rally behind the candidate seen as having the best chance of winning. He added that the lead for Ha is "indeed fluid."
Still, he remained optimistic, saying, "Ha has symbolic value in future strategic industries, and there is also the symbolism of working with Chun Jae-soo, the Democratic Party candidate for Mayor of Busan, to shape Busan's future." He added, "I believe Busan citizens and residents of Buk-gu are placing their trust in that symbolism."
