[Financial News] Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed satisfaction with his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping and said he was committed to continuing cooperation on energy supplies.
According to TASS Russian News Agency and AFP on the 20th local time, Putin said at a joint press conference in Beijing after about three hours of talks with Xi that the two leaders had discussed international issues in depth.
Putin emphasized, "Russia and China are actively cooperating in the energy sector." He added, "Russia is one of the largest exporters of oil, natural gas and coal to China, and we are ready to supply all of these fuels steadily and without interruption to the fast-growing Chinese market."
Energy cooperation is considered one of the key agendas for both countries.
In this regard, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, "President Putin said at today's meeting that a broad agreement had been reached on the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline project, including the route and construction method."
Peskov added that nothing has been finalized regarding the project schedule, but said, "The details still need to be worked out, but a general agreement has already been reached."
"Power of Siberia 2" is a pipeline construction project that would carry gas from Russia to China via Mongolia.
At the same joint press conference, Putin also said efforts to shift settlements between the two countries to their own currencies were significant, noting that "virtually all Russia-China import and export transactions are now being conducted in rubles and yuan."
