[Financial News] A foreign tourist in his 60s who illegally climbed Sanbangsan Mountain in Jeju, where entry is prohibited, became stranded and was dramatically rescued before being booked by police.
According to the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Autonomous Police Unit on the 19th, a Singaporean man in his 60s, identified as A, is under investigation for illegally entering the restricted area of Sanbangsan Mountain in Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo City, the previous afternoon.
A climbed to the summit of Sanbangsan Mountain, then lost his way while descending and became stranded near a cliff. At the time, he had no local SIM card, making it difficult to make calls, and his mobile phone battery was nearly dead.
He used internet access to send an email requesting rescue to the owner of the lodging where he was staying. After confirming the message, the accommodation staff reported it to the 119 emergency number at around 7:10 p.m.
Fire authorities and police launched a search operation using helicopters and other resources, and rescued A at around 9:55 p.m., about three hours after the report was received.
Sanbangsan Mountain is designated as National Designated Cultural Heritage Scenic Site No. 77, and access to all areas except the Sanbanggulsa Temple trail is restricted due to the risk of falling rocks and cliffs, as well as the need to protect natural heritage.
Anyone who enters a restricted area without permission may face up to two years in prison or a fine of up to 20 million won under the Act on Conservation and Utilization of Cultural Heritage.
