[Financial News] Major foreign media outlets rushed to report on the matter after Samsung Electronics management and labor failed to reach an agreement on the 20th, and the union declared it would launch a general strike.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) carried an urgent report under the headline, "Union strike at South Korea's semiconductor giant Samsung Electronics," saying negotiations had broken down.
AFP described Samsung Electronics as "a major producer in the semiconductor industry, whose chips are used in everything from artificial intelligence (AI) to home appliances," and reported that "the strike could cause serious disruptions and losses."
It added that "concerns are rising within the government that if the strike drags on, it could deal a blow to South Korea's export-driven economy, given that semiconductors account for 35% of the country's exports."
AFP also introduced the late Lee Byung-chul, founder of Samsung Electronics, and noted that the company's first union was formed in the late 2010s under his no-union management policy.
Other foreign media outlets also sent out breaking news reports in quick succession, saying Samsung Electronics had failed to reach a labor-management agreement.
They said the dispute had led 40,000 workers to leave their jobs, warning that it could threaten the health of the South Korean economy and disrupt global semiconductor supplies.
They also analyzed that, because Samsung Electronics is the world's largest supplier in the semiconductor sector, which is used across a wide range of devices from data center servers to smartphones and electric vehicles, the failed talks could put the entire global technology supply chain at risk.Business news network CNBC said the scale of the union's strike is likely to remain limited, because a South Korean court ordered that it must not interfere with the operation of safety facilities or block work in order to prevent damage to equipment and semiconductor wafers.Wage negotiations between Samsung Electronics management and labor also collapsed on the day, even after the government's post-facto mediation process.
The Samsung Electronics Branch of the Samsung Group super-enterprise union, known hereafter as the super-enterprise union, said, "Around 10 p.m. on the 19th, the union agreed to the mediation proposal presented by the National Labor Relations Commission, but management rejected it," adding, "The union will proceed with the general strike tomorrow as scheduled and in accordance with the law."
