[Financial News] Employees in Samsung Electronics' DX (Device eXperience Division) division, including those in smartphones and home appliances, have called on the company's largest union, the Samsung Group Supra-Enterprise Labor Union, Samsung Electronics Branch, to suspend negotiations with management. They are protesting that the union leadership is pushing forward bargaining proposals without proper procedures.
The 'Samsung Electronics Workers' Rights Restoration Legal Response Coalition,' made up of DX Division members, held a press conference in front of the Suwon District Court in Gyeonggi Province on the 20th and urged, "The bargaining proposal illegally drawn up behind closed doors must be completely scrapped" and "Please select a new proposal that all Samsung Electronics employees can agree on."
They argue that the supra-enterprise union leadership failed to follow the voting procedures required under the Trade Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act and the union's bylaws while preparing the bargaining proposal.
The coalition criticized the leadership, saying, "Even though the bargaining proposal required approval by a general meeting or a delegates' assembly, the leadership skipped that step," and "Without the consent of all members, just five leaders are deciding the treatment of 130,000 employees."
It also raised allegations that the leadership made pressure-filled remarks after some members said they would not join a strike or voiced different opinions.
The coalition said, "The leadership is threatening members with remarks such as 'We will make a blacklist for management' and 'We will reveal names.'"
It also urged Samsung Electronics management not to accept what it called the unilateral agenda of the supra-enterprise union leadership, which it said has lost its legitimacy.
The Suwon District Court will hold its first hearing on the coalition's injunction request to suspend negotiations against the supra-enterprise union on the morning of the same day. The request was filed on the 15th.
However, since final labor-management negotiations are still under way, observers say it will be difficult for the court to reach an immediate decision on the day.
Yonhap News Agency reported that analysts believe the injunction ruling will not directly affect whether a strike actually takes place.
