[The Financial News] The second post-dispute mediation between Samsung Electronics labor and management is nearing its end. A decision on whether to reach an agreement or break down is expected by around 10:30 p.m. on the 19th at the latest. The company is currently reviewing the alternative proposed by the National Labor Relations Commission. If a mediation proposal is presented instead of a labor-management agreement, both sides must agree to it for a deal to be reached. The union will then seek approval from its members through a vote.
Park Soo-geun, chairman of the National Labor Relations Commission, left the meeting room around 7:20 p.m. and told reporters, "I think by around 10 o'clock, it will either be agreed upon, or a mediation proposal will be issued. If it runs late, it could be around 10:30."
The company is currently reviewing the alternative proposed by Park. He added, "Who is slower? The company is slower," and said, "That is why it could go until 10:30."
The labor side is waiting for the company's decision.
Park explained, "The union side is not reviewing it. Technically, the labor side has to go through a vote by its members, so it cannot make a decision here. If the company says 'OK,' the labor side can put it to a vote. But if the company says 'no,' there would be no need to do that. There are many variables like that."
The union is understood to have already agreed to the alternative proposed by the government.
If labor and management reach an agreement or accept a mediation proposal in today's post-dispute mediation, the union will hold a vote among its members. The negotiations will be finalized only if the agreement or proposal is approved in that vote. If it is rejected, the mediation proposal or agreement will effectively be scrapped.
When asked what would happen if the vote is rejected, Park replied, "Then it's over," adding, "It means a strike."
