[The Financial News] The 22nd National Assembly of the Republic of Korea is expected to elect its National Assembly leadership on June 5 next month.
Floor leaders Han Byung-do of the Democratic Party of Korea and Song Eon-seok of the People Power Party (PPP), along with other ruling and opposition floor leaders, met on the 19th and agreed to elect the National Assembly leadership at a plenary session of the National Assembly on June 5.
The current candidates for Speaker of the National Assembly are Cho Jung-sik from the Democratic Party of Korea, while the candidates for Vice Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea are Nam In-soon for the Democratic Party and Park Deok-hum for the PPP.
The Democratic Party had initially pushed to complete the selection of the next National Assembly leadership on the 20th, but the date was set for June 5 after the PPP argued for a delay until after the June local elections.
The PPP had sought to include a provision in the agreement that the allocation of standing committee chairperson of the National Assembly posts and the agenda items submitted to the plenary session of the National Assembly would follow the agreement of the parliamentary negotiating groups. However, the plan fell through after the Democratic Party asked for further discussion. The Democratic Party is aiming to control all standing committee chairperson posts, and in many cases has not reflected the PPP's views when deciding plenary session agendas.
Ruling and opposition floor leaders are scheduled to meet again next week to discuss the allocation of standing committee chairperson posts and negotiations over plenary session agenda items. The PPP says the chairmanship of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, which is the final step before a bill is brought to the plenary session, should at least be given to the opposition. It argues that when the Democratic Party has led the committee, it has often pushed through revised bills unilaterally, leaving little time for the contents of legislation to be properly disclosed before the day of the plenary session.
